Wash beans. Boil the beans in a large pan for a few minutes. Remove from heat and let stand for an hour. Simmer the beans for an hour, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Put the beans and cooking water in a heavy pot or casserole. Mix in the salt, mustard, molasses, and brown sugar into the beans. Bury the onion in the beans.
